POOL ADDITION
WHERE
Old Westbury, NY
WHEN
2024
Conceived as the completion of an idea embedded in the original house, the pool addition occupies the central garden embraced by the residence’s J-shaped plan. Designed years after the home was completed, the intervention extends its “made to order” ethos into the landscape, treating the pool not as an isolated amenity but as another precisely calibrated outdoor room.
Set within the clients’ richly cultivated 3.75-acre property, the pool is positioned in close dialogue with the house while preserving the character of the surrounding private arboretum. Its simple rectangular geometry echoes the disciplined language of the architecture: exposed concrete, weathered wood, broad planes of glass, and carefully framed openings. A board-formed concrete perimeter gives the pool a sense of permanence and continuity with the home’s concrete structure, while its restrained profile allows the surrounding garden to remain dominant.
The pool sits slightly above the lawn, negotiating the site’s subtle changes in grade and creating a defined edge between cultivated landscape and water. Transparent glass guards maintain uninterrupted views across the garden while providing the necessary enclosure with minimal visual impact. A narrow terrace between the house and pool accommodates seating and gathering, extending the domestic spaces outdoors without introducing a competing architectural gesture.
From the lawn, the pool reads as a low horizontal plane set against the vertical composition of the house and mature trees. From within the residence, it becomes a reflective foreground to the garden, reinforcing the reciprocal relationship between architecture and landscape established by the original design.
More than an addition, the pool fulfills the house’s initial site strategy. Occupying the garden anticipated by the J-shaped plan, it completes a sequence of interior and exterior spaces developed over time, allowing water, architecture, and the clients’ evolving landscape to become part of a single composition throughout the changing seasons.
